Cocoa’s Story: Searching for Forever

Imagine you’re 90-years-old and for your entire life, you’ve known only one home, one family, and one routine.

Suddenly, you find yourself in a new home, with new people and an entirely new environment to adjust to.

Meet Cocoa, the mellowest of chocolate Labs. She’s 14 years old and with the recent passing of her pet parent, has found herself with no place to call home.

She grew from a puppy to a senior girl with few changes in her life. Add to that some severe arthritis in her back legs, making it nearly impossible for her to climb stairs. Life is dealing Cocoa a difficult hand these days.

All we want for this gentle, loving dog is for her to spend whatever time she has left feeling safe and loved.

Here’s what we can tell you about Cocoa:

  • She recently had a thorough check-up at the vet and aside from the arthritis, she’s in excellent condition.
  • She’s never lived with other animals and probably wouldn’t appreciate having any physical contact with a dog or cat at this stage of life.
  • Climbing even one step is extremely difficult and uncomfortable for her. She will not use a ramp but we’ve fitted her with a harness-style carrier that assists in lifting her back end. A home with one or no steps would be ideal.
  • She does have some accidents. Come on … she’s 14.
  • She’s an affectionate, calm girl. Nothing much bothers her — including loud noises, thunderstorms, meeting new people, etc.

We don’t know how much longer Cocoa has, but we don’t think her time is up yet. We’ve seen her tail wag a bit these past few days, and she likes to give kisses. She can still give love and companionship, and she’s asking so little in return.

Please, let’s help Cocoa find Forever.
