Finn and foster mom Donna

This sweet, senior boy has found himself in a sad place.

Imagine living your entire life with your special person…the very person who saved you when you were a young pup. Then after 12 wonderful years, your person seems different. You can tell something’s wrong, but you don’t know what — and you have no idea that what’s coming is about to change your life forever.

Finn alone outside

We were so taken with Finn and his very special person Ellen, that we wanted to share their story in hopes there may be another special person out there who can help Finn on his journey in finding his next forever home.

This story is told by daughter Sarah and neighbor Sue:

“Finn was rescued when he was just a puppy in Wildwood NJ. He’d been left outside day and night on a second-story deck with his little head sticking out between the spindles, looking at the neighbors below.

“Ellen was visiting in Wildwood and decided she’d like to give this little black ball of wiry fur a new home. She took the puppy on the third week in September, which is Irish Weekend, a popular celebration in Wildwood. Knowing the puppy was seven months old, Ellen decided the dog’s birthday would be March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day). Her son gave him a good Irish name: Mister Finnegan, Finn for short.

“Finnegan and Ellen became the best of friends. She would take him for walks and car rides, visiting friends and family members in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Ellen also took Finn to get his holiday picture taken with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.

“Finn had accumulated so many toys that Ellen gave him his own little wicker suitcase to store them! Each day, Finn would sort through the toys to find the exact one he wanted to play with. When Ellen became a grandmother about a 1 1/2 years ago, 11-year-old Finn was thrilled! Older dogs and babies aren’t always a good match, but Finn loved the new addition to the family. Now a new basket with baby toys was added to the mix, but Finn knew they belonged to someone else and respected their spot on the floor next to his own suitcase.

“In the past few months Ellen was not feeling well, and Finn stayed by her side, happily nestled next to her. Before long, Ellen was unable to take Finn for his walks or give him the playtime he was used to — but Finn didn’t mind. If he was with Ellen, he was happy.

“Ellen recently passed away, leaving her loyal companion behind. Finn is sad, but still as loving and playful as ever. He is excited to begin his journey of finding a new family to love.”

Finn has bounced around a bit the past few weeks. Ellen’s daughter, Sarah, took Finn into her home — but her three cats immediately made it clear they wanted him gone! (Finn was fine with them.) Sue, a neighbor, then took him in — but her dog just wasn’t interested in sharing his home.

So Finn wasn’t able to unpack his bags. And that’s where we come in.

Foster mom Donna getting to know Finn

Our DogsHome team will be fostering Finn until he finds his forever home. We like to think Ellen knows her boy is in good hands with us.

Finn is small and gentle, fun and easy-going. He gets along with adults, children, dogs and cats. We’ll provide him with all the care, support and love he needs.

But what Finn would really like most of all, is to unpack his suitcase one last time and know that he’s finally home … again.
