Smiling From Ear To Ear

sophie adopt 033Some stories just keep you smiling — and this is one of those stories.

Things were going great for Sophie a couple of years ago. An easy-going pitbull, she was living with two of her puppies in an apartment.

But then the landlord decided he didn’t want three pits living in one of his apartments, and so the family gave the dogs to a shelter.

In spite of the constant barking, overwhelming smells from other dogs, and confinement in a kennel, Sophie managed to remain mellow and content. She was considered an “easy” dog by the volunteers at the shelter.

And yet no one was interested in her.

If you know about shelters, you know that black dogs — especially pits — are usually the last on anyone’s wish list.

So Sophie sat.

And sat.

And sat.

After 1 1/2 years, it started to become too much, even for such a gentle, sweet girl as Sophie. The staff began noticing signs of stress … and that’s where we came in.

One of our shelter friends told us Sophie needed out. We took one look at her photo, and we fell in love.

We admit to having a weakness for pitties. We also have a weakness for dogs who are showing signs of deterioration in a shelter environment — because no matter how caring the staff, it’s not how dogs were meant to live.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have any foster homes available for Sophie. So now it was our turn to wait.

And wait.

And finally, one of our DogsHome team members said, “Let’s get her out of there. I’ll take her.”

Sophie went to live in her foster home where she thrived. She would bounce out of the house every morning into the backyard for some playtime (and bathroom duties), joyfully go on walks, and greet anyone and everyone who entered the house with one of her special “Sophie kisses.”

“She’s a perfect dog,” said her foster mom.

Sophie also liked her foster brother and sister — she treated them like they were her very own puppies.

But the story doesn’t end there.

A little more than 200 miles away, two people were becoming hooked on the TV show, “Pitbulls and Parolees.”

“The program helped us see how wonderful this breed is,” says Wendi. “And we just fell in love with their smile!”

They wanted to adopt a dog, and they wanted it to be a pitbull.

So when Wendi and her husband, Jim, were visiting Sophie’s foster mom … well, we all know how love at first sight works!

A few weeks ago, Sophie traveled home with Wendi and Jim on a foster-to-adopt arrangement.

And now we’re happy to announce that arrangement is official: Sophie has found her Forever Home!
